Proverbs 31:10 refers to “A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.” This verse describes Annie Kirk Garrett perfectly, who passed from this life to join her Savior on January 9th, 2018. She was blessed to continue to live in her own home until her passing, except for the last few months. Annie was 97.
Annie Edna was born January 2, 1921 to Mackey (Mack) Jasper and Estley Abigail (Jackson) Kirk in Montague County, Texas. She was the third of 10 children, of which 8 grew to adulthood.
A church service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 12, 2018 at the Missionary Baptist Church, with burial being at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, beside her beloved husband, J.B. Officiating is Pastor Glynn Willis. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Zapata Funeral Home.
Annie spent her early years on her parent’s farm, helping in the house but preferring to be in the field (she loved picking cotton by hand). She played sports and spent a lot of time taking up for her sister, Maggie and brother, J.C., when other children would pick on them. It didn’t bother he to whip a kid if she thought it necessary.
Taking her very first train ride, all alone, to Wisconsin, she married John Bennett Garrett on February 28, 1943. When he went to Europe during WWII, she and their baby daughter, Patsy Ann, moved back with her parents until J.B. (Jack) came home. After he returned, they moved around a lot. During these years, two more girls would be added to the family, Barbara June and Sandra Bennett. Finally arrived to Paducah in August of 1953, to help Annie’s sister, Minnie, run the Panhandle Gas, of which they later purchased. Sometime in the early 1960,s, Panhandle Gas sold out to Fina Gas. Annie and J.B. would remain here the rest of their lives.
Annie was a wonderful homemaker, helping with the family finances with ironing for the public, working at White Star Laundry and J.C. Penny’s, slinging food at the Willis’ Stand, which was across from the Paducah Elementary and High School. In the 1970’s, she became employed at Halls Scruggs as clerk and alteration lady until the store closed in the mid 1990’s. At the time, she was only 75. She loved working in her yard. She pieced and quilted many, many quilts until her tremors kept her from being able to hold the needle; she was then in her early 90’s. But never mind that, she would just become a BIGGER fan of the Texas Rangers and Dallas Mavericks.
She was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church of Paducah, Texas, since 1957; bringing her famous “Pink Salad” to every church fellowship.
Those left to cherish her memory are daughters, Patsy Holley of Paducah, Barbara Walker and husband Charles of Paducah, Sandra Skinner and husband, Ronald of Paducah; grandchildren Che`rei Holley Hicks and husband, Tim of Paducah, Nicole Holley Thompson and husband, Vance of Paducah, John Walker of Stephenville, Russ Walker and wife, Kellye of Ackerly, Holly Skinner Lee and husband, Kevin of Paducah; 9 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister , Nettie Kirk Carr of Beggs, Oklahoma; J.B.’s brother and sister-in-law, Glen and Betty Garrett of Gainseville, Texas and a large extended family and church family.
