Mr. Winfred Dean Jones, “Coach Jones,” 79, of Chesnee, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 8, 2018.

A native of Rutherford County, NC, he was the husband to Carole Scruggs Jones for 55 years and the son of the late Henry Clifford Jones and Annie Ethel Cantrell Jones.

Coach Jones attended Gardner-Webb College, played professional baseball for the Giants Organization and graduated from Wofford College. Coach Jones taught US History, Driver’s Ed, and Physical Education at Chesnee High School. During his tenure at Chesnee, Coach Jones served as athletic director and coached basketball and football. Coach Jones coached baseball throughout his 47-year career at Chesnee High School. He proudly served his country in the Army National Guard. He was a member of Arrowwood Baptist Church where he served on many committees and held church offices; he was proud to be a member of the Upper Room Sunday school class and of the Golden Arrows Senior Citizens. Above all, he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Chris Jones (Jami) and Gregg Jones (June) both of Chesnee; his daughter, Angie Rizzo (Ret. Lt. Col. Chris); three brothers, Hoyle, Charles and Myles (Dot) Jones; one sister-in-law, Shirley Jones; and by six grandchildren, Angelee and CJ Rizzo, David Jones and Heath Jones (Jessica), and Tanner and Paxton Jones.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, J.R., Bill, Jack and Ravenell Jones and two sisters, Tula Hayes and Sue Greene.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 13, 2018 from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Chesnee High School Gymnasium.

Funeral services will follow at 2:15 pm in the gymnasium with Rev. Daniel Godfrey, Dr. Jerry White and Dr. Greg Mathis officiating.

The family will attend a private interment at Arrowwood Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers serving will be David Jones, Heath Jones, CJ Rizzo, Brandon Henderson, Randy Tucker, Reggie Frye, Scott Wease and Ted Nichols. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Upper Room Sunday School Class at Arrowwood Baptist Church. A special escort for “Papa Coach” will be Angelee Rizzo, Tanner Jones, and Paxton Jones. A special escort for Mrs. Coach Jones will be Stephen Cantrell.

The family will be at the home of his son, Chris Jones during this time.
