Upon returning from the war he married Ann Hayes Gann on April 5, 1946 and they spent 67 years faithfully by each other's side until her death. Mr. Harwell worked for the railroad and the Coke Cola Company before beginning his career at the U. S. Postal Service. He retired as Postmaster of Corinth in 1987 after more than 35 years. During retirement he and his wife belonged to the Tennessee Golf Association, where they enjoyed playing golf on various courses throughout the state where they always walked all 18 holes. They traveled a lot visiting their family especially their daughters and grandsons. His daughters gave him a computer when he was 80, and it changed his life. After he taught himself how to use it, he enjoyed emailing family and friends and reading on the internet. Once he discovered eBay he spent time bidding on fun items that he gave to family and friends. He was a member of Foote Street Church of Christ.

Along with his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one brother Charles Ray Harwell and one sister Carolyn Harwell Brooks.

Mr. Harwell is survived by three daughters, Charlotte Harwell of New Orleans, LA, Jamie McHenry and husband John of Annandale, VA, and Susan Sperry and husband Bill of Cape Coral, FL; three grandsons Parker Sperry and his wife Sarah, Hayes Sperry and Hunter Sperry; two great-grandchildren Abigail Grace Sperry and William Grant Sperry; a sister Marilyn Harwell Nichols, several nieces, nephews and a host friends.
