After 2 years at Mercer University, he joined the U.S. Navy, and served for 2 years as an electronics technician that fed his intense interest and love of other countries, stamp collecting, foreign languages, and his life long time hobby of amateur radio under the callsigns W4MIA and N4IA. As a ham radio operator, Bob made contacts in every country on earth except for North Korea. The 13 languages he could speak included Spanish, Russian, French, German, Arabic, and Mandarin Chinese.

At Georgia Tech, Bob earned his BSEE and graduated with high honors in 1951 and was a member of Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi honor societies. During the 1970’s and 1980’s, he represented IEEE in several international exchanges including 3 delegations to the USSR and 3 delegations to the Peoples Republic of China.

In 1977, Bob and his wife, Kathleen, were part of the first Friendship Force exchange from Atlanta to Newcastle, England, and as part of an around the world exchange in 1997 to Irkutsk, Siberia. Bob and Kathleen both served as elders at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. Along with a small group of other church members with a vision for reaching out to international students in the Atlanta area, they started the International Sunday School Class that has continued s ince 1975. In support of that vision, they were instrumental in launching the Atlanta Ministry to International Students (AMIS), which has since expanded that outreach ministry to other churches in the Atlanta area.

During his retirement, Bob, took up genealogy research and pursued it with a passion, amassing some 98,000 names in his database.
