Reed, Ethel Louise, 96, died December 23, 2017 in Windber, PA. She was born December 28, 1920 in Mutual, Westmoreland County, PA.

Ethel was preceded in death by her father, Michael Matkovich, mother, Elizabeth Matkovich Charney, husband Paul D. Reed, son, Roger P. Reed, brothers Joseph Matkovich, Jake Matkovich, Michael Charney, John Charney, and sister, Leona Barry. She is survived by her daughters Haze Varner Tesler, Vivian Horner Lammachia, both of Bushkill, Pa; sons Montana Horner, Elton Pa and Brenton Horner, Santa Barbara, California; grandchildren Zane Varner, Bushkill, Pa, Tracy M. Horner, Windber Pa, Autumn Leppert, Indianapolis, In, Amelia Horner Levadnuk, Santa Barbara, Ca; and four great grandchildren.

Ethel's life was simple, honest, hardworking, and straightforward; her family the overarching, perhaps only, focus throughout. Simply, she was strong. Hers was an austere and intrepid fortitude, and it must be remembered that greatness does not come from what one has boasted as accomplishment so much as what one has quietly abided.

And she could sing! Her wild gypsy heart (for she was a Hungarian gypsy, every member of her family a natural musician) expressed a rare emotive beauty that moved the coldest of souls.

But that voice has been silenced. Life is a breeze upon the cheek, a fleeting thing that cannot always have a tomorrow. Now it is that sad time to say "goodbye".

Sunset doesn't last all evening
A cloudburst doesn't last all day
After all this my loves, I'm up and must be leaving;
But it's not always going to be this grey.
All things must pass. All things must pass away.

A private service will be held on Ethel's birthday, Thursday, December 28, 2017, followed by interment at Richland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ethel to the Church of Brethren Home in Windber would be appreciated.
