Dayton Hunter, 82, of Rockford, IL, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 7, 2018 and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Dayton was born to Loran and Jessie Hunter, on May 12, 1935, and raised in Coleridge, NE. Dayton was one of seven children and was predeceased by his parents, brother, Donald (Vern), sister, Carol, sister-in-law's, Jean and Karen, daughter, Luellen and grandson, Cory. He graduated from Coleridge High School, and went on to attend the University of Kansas with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Dayton married Susan Rapp on December 30, 1961, and were faithful members of Christ United Methodist Church in Rockford, IL. Dayton worked at North American Aviation until 1966, after which he worked for Sundstrand for 30 years. Dayton was passionate about all sports: baseball, basketball, football, track, golf, and he served on the East High School Booster Board from 1976-1994. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, as well as bird watching. Dayton was active in Habitat for Humanity, and helping start CUMC Work Camp. Dayton was active in numerous church functions, and coached numerous youth in baseball and basketball throughout his life. Most importantly, Dayton was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Dayton is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Susan, children, Deena (David) Lantz, Kent Hunter, Alan (Jodi) Hunter, Derek (Jenny) Hunter; grandchildren, Alyssa Lantz, Jessie Lantz, Andrew Lantz, Heather (Ivan Gonzalez) Christiansen, Mitchell(Krystal) Christiansen, Garrett (fiancé, Haley Burgess) Hunter, Aaron Hunter, Leah Hunter, Ryan Hunter, Hailey Hunter, Kaci Hunter, Rylee Hunter; great grandchildren, Ethan, Oliver, McKynlee, Barrett; siblings, Jean (Tony) Garcia, Lucille Olson, Gordon Hunter, Lowell Hunter; brother-in-law, P.V. George as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Gravesite Details

Lu Ellen, Susan and Dayton's daughter, is buried here but this headstone serves as a cenotaph for them as they were both cremated. This stone was placed in November 2022 after being an unmarked grave since Lu Ellen's interment on April 7, 1969.
