Earlene Virginia was born November 20, 1914 to the proud parents, Tom and Mobelia Bailey Criswell in Victory, Texas. The family moved to the Marston community where she grew up and attended Polk County Public Schools and later, Phyllis Wheatley High School in Houston, Texas.

She was baptized at an early age and united with St. Paul Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. J. Benjamin. Earlene loved to sing in church, she also participated in many other church activities. She and her sisters later organized a group and traveled around to local communities singing and praising the Lord.

In 1935, Earlene met and married Mr. Roy Lee Lacy and to this union six children were born; Versie, Vermon, Obie, Obelia, Atha and Elaine. Earlene loved her children and always wanted the best for them. She worked hard to provide a stable home for her family and she instilled the importance of a good education.

In 1955, Earlene met and married Mr. Thearthur Scott and moved her family to Houston, Texas. She worked in various occupations, but she most loved working as a private duty nurse. Upon her arrival to Houston, she united with Metropolitan Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. R. P. Pruitt. Later, she moved her membership to Central Garden, MBC, Rev. Dr. L. D. Gilliam, Pastor; Greater Love Baptist Church, Rev. O. Dolphus, Pastor,; and Fontaine First Baptist Church, Pastor J. H. Brown, where she was the Mother of the Church and remained there until her demise.

Earlene’s love of family extended to others whose presence she graced. She never met anyone whom she didn’t embrace. Her home was always open to those in need. She loved to cook and always had food cooking on the stove. You had to eat something when you came to “Mother’s” house to visit. Her specialty was greens and cornbread.

Earlene departed this life on Sunday, January 7, 2018. She was preceded in death by husband, Thearthur Scott, both parents, thirteen siblings, two children, Vermon and Atha, three grand-children, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
