December 23, 1932 January 6, 2018 Louise F. Kegley, 85, of Roanoke, Va., died on Saturday, January 6, 2018. Louise once said she loved seeing her name in the newspaper, even though that didn't happen nearly as often as people around her She met her husband of nearly 60 years while working in her grandfather's business, the Roanoke Times. Sadly, Louise won't be reading this now, nor return home to her beloved Monterey, as her year-long string of illnesses, hospitalization and rehab care has taken its toll. She died on January 6, 2018, having just turned 85. Louise was a purveyor of tough but patient love, and extended her kindness far beyond what she taught and left her family. Her grandchildren would agree that she was one of the coolest grandmoms around, and encouraged more than one to look at life from a different perspective. Ask any of those grandchildren to tell the story about the time she stood in line to buy concert tickets for a certain classic rock band for one of her sons. She was predeceased by her parents, Dr. Richard Fowlkes of Richmond and Louise Fishburn Fowlkes of Roanoke. Louise leaves behind her husband of 59 ½ years, George; son, George Andrew Kegley Jr. (Andy) and Nan, of Wytheville; daughter, Mary Louise (Sissy) of Roanoke; sons, Robert Parker Kegley (Robert) and Melissa, of Wytheville, and Richard Fowlkes Kegley (Dickie) and Kristy, of Atlanta; grandchildren, Calder, Grace, Reed, Nathan, Maria, Emma, Amy, Katterine, Clara; great-grandchildren, Chase, Beau, Sara, Hugo, Finley and Sawyer; two nephews; a niece and a stepsister, Ferebee Cooper. She was assisted by four wonderful caregivers, Jacoba Riggins, Norma Burdette, Joyce Brown and Sandra Williams, as well as the staff at Brandon Oaks. Louise had many favorite causes, from Mary Baldwin College, where she served on the Board of Trustees, the Mill Mountain Advisory Committee and other conservation interests, and the J.B. and Grace Fishburn Memorial Fund, to which memorial donations can be made, care of the Foundation for Roanoke Valley, P.O. Box 1159, Roanoke, VA 24006 or to the charity of your choice. No prior visitation. A Service will be held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Roanoke on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at 11 a.m., with a reception to follow at the church. Interment in the St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Wytheville, Va., will be held at 4 p.m. Online condolences may be sent to www.oakeys.com.
