Monsignor Robert J. McCarthy, better known as the "Carny Priest" or Father Mac for his ministry to thousands of circus and amusement show people across North America.
Graduated fromm Potsdam High School then studied at Potsdam State Teachers College for one tear before entering Wadhams Hall in Ogdensburg and St. Bernard's Seminary in Rochester. Ordained October 19, 1945. Named Papal Chaplain, with title of Monsignor, on October 19, 1960. Appointed in 1961 to Pastor of St. James in Gouverneur, NY and in 1972 as pastor of Holy Family until his retirement in 1993. Also Chaplain to the area fire and police departments for many decades. He hosted daily and weekly radio shows to reach our and comfort people. Additionally he was recognized internationally for reaching out to outdoor show folk. Celebrating Mass, baptisms, marriages and funerals. He would "carry his church" with him wherever he went and administer the sacraments wherever needed, in tents, near a Ferris Wheel, or wherever needed to serve the people he loved. In 1970, Pope Paul VI named Msgr. McCarthy to the Pontificate Commission for the Pastoral Care of Itinerant People. He was also named the official chaplain of over 60,000 carnival workers through the USA. For his work, he was invited to a private audience with Pope John Paul II in 1979.
