IRAQ WAR VETERAN AND KILLED IN ACTION

SPC Samuel (Sam) Donald Stone, 20, of Port Orchard, Washington died on May 31, 2009 in Tallil, Iraq from injuries sustained in a rollover accident while on a convoy mission. Sam was in the Gunners Hatch of a M117 Armored Security Vehicle on a convoy security mission from Al Taqaddum in central Iraq to Tallil in the southeast, when his vehicle rolled.

Born June 10, 1988 at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Bremerton, Washington to Steve and Nancy (Gorham) Stone.

Sam grew up in the South Kitsap, Washington. Sam was a brilliant kid, but he didn't want to do education the regular way. He joined the Job Corps near White Swan in Yakima County and completed his final two years of high school in six months, graduating from Wellpinit-Fort Semco High in 2006

After graduation, Sam joined the carpenters apprenticeship in Seattle, Washington. He worked as a construction worker for awhile but he really wanted to be an architect and thought the military was a good way to have his education paid for

On 21 March, 2007 Sam joined The Washington State Army National Guard, completing basic training at Ft. Jackson,South Carolina and went on to Fort Eustis, Virginia for a CH-47 Helicopter Repairer course where he earned top honors as the Distinguished Graduate. Sam went on to serve with Company E, 1-168th Aviation,at Ft. Lewis, Washington, excelling as a parts removal specialist and a member of the Downed Aircraft Recovery Team. In the Spring of 2008 Sam volunteered to deploy with the 81st Brigade Combat Team and by summer he was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom where he served with the Troop C, 1st Squadron, 303rd Calvary.During his tour of duty there, his proficiency and excellence earned him a promotion to the rank of Specialist in April. His deployment was spent primarily guarding supply convoys of contractor trucks as they drove between American bases.

Sam was preceded in death by his grandfathers Donald, and Bill; and his Aunt Barbara. Survivors include his companion "Most Beautiful" Toni ; parents Steve and Nancy; sister Sarah (Svend); brothers Jay (MLeah) and Todd (Kimberly). Grandmothers Evelynn (Robert) and Mary ; uncle Mike; aunts Linda , Susan (Tim) and Peg (Tom) ; cousins Corina and son Justin, Jennifer, Jeff and Kris and Nick . Nieces and nephews Devin,, Angelina and Troy, Ethan, and Ariana . Along with Sam's beloved black lab "Ayla.".

Sam's passion was reading. He enjoyed computers and gaming with his friends.

He loved living in Western Washington where he spent most of his time fishing, hunting and exploring in the mountains.

He was an avid storyteller and always had an audience whether it was at a campout in front of the fire or in the kitchen eating pizza, cooking hot tacos and enjoying Otter pops.

He had an extremely humble and loyal soul. He never met a stranger, only friends. Being there for others in need before they were aware they needed him.

His wonderful grin, contagious laughter and pure genuine kindness were felt by so many and will live on in our hearts forever, No words or actions will ever describe the hole left in our hearts from Sam's passing.

Interment services will be held at Sunset Lane Cemetery in Port Orchard, Washington.
