A graveside service will announced and held in the spring at the Riverside Cemetery in Gouverneur. Arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.
Robert was born in Gouverneur on January 3, 1925, the son of Walter "Harry" and Leola Bouck Appleby.
He graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1943 and served in the European Theater during WW II in the United States Army. Upon honorable discharge from the service, Robert attended the Watertown Collegiate Center where he Robert married Barbara Barnes on October 16, 1954 in Chateaugay.
He worked at Empire Livestock, Antwerp Roofing and operated a hardware business for 3 years. Robert worked his remaining career in the banking industry, having worked at the First National Bank of Gouverneur, the Bank of Gouverneur, and retiring from the St. Lawrence National Bank on January 1, 1987.
The couple lived in Antwerp before moving to Gouverneur in 1972 where they resided 16 years and later moved to Maine. They returned to the Gouverneur area in 1993 and later settled in Adams where they have lived since 2004.
Robert was a member of the Congregational Church in Antwerp, Gouverneur First Presbyterian Church, Gouverneur VFW, and Gouverneur American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, spending time in the garden and at their camp on Black Lake.
Robert is survived by his wife, Barbara; a son, Brian of Adams; a daughter, Bonnie Drummond of Unity ME; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Meryl and William Appleby; and a sister, Lorna Long.
Memorial donations in Robert's memory may be made to the Gouverneur First Presbyterian Church Steeple Fund, 22 Church Street, Gouverneur, NY 13642.
