Wilma Jane Cook, 84, of Anadarko passed away surrounded by loved ones on January 5, 2018 in Marlow, Oklahoma. Visitation will be on Sunday January 7, 2018 from 1-4pm at Smith Funeral Home in Anadarko. Closed casket graveside services will be held on Monday January 8, 2018 at 10:00am in Memory Lane Cemetery with Elmer Abshier officiating.
Wilma was born in Portsmouth, Ohio to Arthur Lewis and Della Evans-Lewis on March 31, 1933. She attended Friendship Elementary where she received an F in Geography on a 4th grade report card that the family has recently found; which highly explains her driving skills. Wilma married Eugene Cook in 1954 and together they operated a family owned Winchell’s Donut Shop in California. Mr. and Mrs. Cook eventually moved and settled roots in Anadarko where Wilma retired from Hollytex Carpet Mill and spent the remainder of her life as a homemaker. Wilma was actively involved in her church, Square Top Baptist, and she stayed busy chasing grandchildren, volunteering at the Christian Center and enjoyed working in the soup kitchen. Wilma was a “kitchen connoisseur”! Around the holidays, she and her daughter made several kinds of cookies, candies, and at least 60 fruit cakes that she would often give out to people….even if they didn’t like them. Wilma won 1st prize at the State Fair for her delicious apple butter and she was always willing to pass down the family recipe….NOT! Wilma believed that cold hands equal warm hearts. She often “robbed Peter to pay Paul”, and if you ask Gene, she would “argue with a brick wall or a fence post”. She was stubborn, impatient, and fearless……and she loved her people! She never hesitated to lend a helping hand if needed, she always made sure everyone in the home was cared for and fed before herself, and she wore the title of “mom or grandma” proudly….usually in the form of little names or handprints on her shirt. Favorite family memories include camping out in the Winnebago the night before, waiting for the Rose Parade. Her “favorite” granddaughter recalls that she would not allow them out of bed in the mornings until she got the fire started to heat the living room, and at night they always knew it was bed time when the tv channel was flipped to Johnny Carson. She made a mean PB&J, she threatened to kill grandpa every night but made sure his lunch was packed the next day for work. She loved watching her Morning Glories, she was very proud of her children, and her best friends were her neighbors. The family is 100% certain that Wilma is smiling in the arms of her late husband of 63 years and the conversation is very similar to this: “Wilma Jane it’s about time you got here”! “Well Gene, I got here just as fast as I could”.
Wilma is preceded in death by her husband Gene, her parents, all of her siblings, a son in law, and 1 great granddaughter.
She is survived by her Son, John Cook and wife Norma of Guthrie, Ok, her Daughter Sherry Heath of Winchester Virginia, her Granddaughter Rashell Powell and husband Tim of Duncan, Ok. Grandson Chris Cook and wife Silvia of Moore, Ok. Grandson James Heath and wife Jude of Leesburg, Virginia, and her Grandson Noah Cook of Guthrie, Ok. Along with 6 great grandchildren, and 1 great great granddaughter.
The family would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Hess and staff, Lifeline Home Health, The Advantage Program, Gregstons Nursing Home, Chisholm Trail Hospice, Square Top Baptist Church and members. Judy, Elmer, Irene, Dean, Janetta, Cookie, Craig, Kim, and any others that we may have not mentioned. You all have been such a true blessing to us and we say thank you for everything that you have done for our mom/grandma.
