Mr. David L. Coker of Decatur graduated from Knoxville Central High School in 1945, attended North Georgia College and graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1953 with a degree in law. Between 1953 & 1956, he practiced law in Knoxville, before becoming counsel to the Small Business Administration in Atlanta, where he stayed until he retired in 1986. During his time with the SBA, he operated 11 legal offices in 8 states, litigating in 18 Federal Judicial Districts in the Southeast. In 1980 he was the recipient of the SBA's highest career award, the Gold Medal for Distinguished Service. After his retirement, he was a consultant with Irving Burton Associates, Inc. and devoted pro bono time to charitable organizations. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Decatur, where he served as chair of deacons and in many other capacities. He was also president of the Menís Bible Class, and active in the music ministry. He was preceded in death by his wife Peggy Coker; son, David Coker, Jr.; and daughter, Deborah McDorman. He is survived by his grandson, Asher Burk of Tucker; granddaughter, Caitlin McDorman of Atlanta; sisters, Nita Webb, Jean Rouse, Elizabeth Hammer and Dyllis Highland, all of Knoxville, TN; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
