Ernest L. "Ernie" Hull, 85, longtime resident of Cambridge, died Oct. 19, 2006, at Grouse Valley Manor in Dexter.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Cambridge Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Cambridge Cemetery with an escort provided by the Cambridge Community Fire Department. The family will greet friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Miles Funeral Service.

A memorial has been established for the Cambridge Fire Department Auxiliary, P.O. Box 61, Cambridge, KS 67023. Contributions may also be made through the funeral home.

Ernie was born the fifth child of William Oliver and Ida Myrtle (Laird) Hull, on July 26, 1921, in Drakes Creek, Ark. He grew up on and around ranches in the southeastern part of the Flint Hills, and they were his place of refuge, where he talked to his Lord and Savior many times.

He and Elma Marie Huggins married Aug. 10, 1943, in Sedan. He and his family resided in the Cedar Vale and Grenola areas until 1949 when they moved to Douglass where he worked for Stelbar Oil and Taylor Grain. In 1957, the family moved to Grand Summit where he worked for Prairie Land and Cattle Co. and the Les Cooper Cattle Co. After Ernie retired in 1994, he and his wife moved to Cambridge.

He was a member of the Church of Christ. Ernie loved the great outdoors and taught his children lots of things, including names of trees, wildflowers, grasses and birds and how to distinguish one from the other. He was a very familiar site along the gravel roads in the Cambridge area, building five- and six-barb wire fences. Fences that he built can be seen driving down gravel roads in the eastern part of Cowley County or south of Douglass on U.S. 77. Straight as a string and twice as stout, these will be our constant reminder that he is still with us in spirit.

When Ernie became aware that his posts were all in the ground straight, the wires were all tight and the last clip was put on, it was time to head to the house. He did just that after he picked up his post driver, sledge and his rock bar.

Ernie was instrumental in establishing the Volunteer Fire Department in Cambridge in 1963 with one truck which was a 1949 or '50 Ford with a 200-gallon tank. He was the fire chief of CCFD 8 until the late 1960s. He was still assistant chief and president of the fire board.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Donald E. Hull, his brothers, Roy Hull, Omer Hull and Oscar Hull; and his sisters, Ora Bohannon and Una Cook.

Survivors include his wife, Elma Hull, of the home; his sons and their wives, Kay and Ernest Hull Jr., Cambridge, John and Kathy Hull, Toronto, Mark and Kelly Hull, Cambridge, and Jeff and Luinda Hull, Colbran, Colo.; a daughter, Marsha Pate, and her husband, Walter, Cambridge; a brother, Adary Hull, and his wife, Eleanor, Dexter; his sisters, Reba Thompson, Sedan, Ida Moore, Wichita, and Ula Mae Rucker, Houston; a sister-in-law, Lucille Hull, Winfield; 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
