Herman Goad James

Herman Goad James, age 94, of Oak Ridge, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at his home.

He was born Dec. 28, 1918, in Braxton County, W.Va., the son of Newton N. and Elizabeth Carte James.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. He came to Oak Ridge in 1958 from West Virginia.

Mr. James was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and held position of the oldest membership. He retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Corporation, where he worked as a machine shop supervisor at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vevia Eleanor James, on Aug. 9, 1979.

He is survived by daughter, Sherri Holder and husband, Jim, of Oak Ridge; two grandsons, Mark Holder and wife, Carrie, of Knoxville, and Matthew Holder of Oak Ridge; two great-grandchildren, Harrison Holder and Grant Holder; favorite niece, Ruth James Williams of Huntington, W.Va.; and a very special friend, Helen Murphy of Oak Ridge.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at Weatherford Mortuary. A graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at Anderson Memorial Gardens with his grandsons officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Tennessee National Guard Honor Guard.

The family asks that any memorials be made to Recovery at Cokesbury, 9908 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37922, or Starting point Ministry of Oak Ridge, in care of Christ Community Church, 100 Ogden Road, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
