Born in Timpson, Texas to Ferdinand (Fred) and Minnie McLemore Haden. He grew up in rural Shelby County with 3 sisters, Madian, Lucy, Fairy and 3 brothers, Julian Frank, George Morrow and Roy Benton.

The United States had entered the World War two months prior when Atkin registered for the military draft on June 5th, 1917 as required by law. His registration card completed in Harrison County, Texas noted his age as 28, home address of Timpson, occupation as a bookkeeper for the Waterman Lumber Company, single, Caucasian, no prior military service and an exemption to the draft claimed due to chronic appendicitis. He was described being of medium height and slender built with brown eyes and light brown hair.

Fifteen months later on September 4, 1918 he was inducted into the US Army in Marshall, Texas, given the rank of Private and assigned serial # 3983404. He and fellow inductees were then sent by train to Camp Travis, San Antonio, Texas to begin basic training with the 165th Depot Brigade. Following basic Atkin remained with the 165th where he rose to the rank of Regimental Sergeant Major. Four months following the end of the World War he was honorably discharged on March 26, 1919 and awarded the World War I Victory Medal.

He and Miss Sadie Sinclair were wed in Harrison County on July 18, 1926 when he was 36 years old. On April 27, 1942 Atkin, age 52 would for a second time register for a military draft while living in Shreveport, Louisiana and employed by the Trast Lumber Industries, Inc. He would see another world war come and go in his lifetime.

Living in Shreveport at 423 Albany Ave for 22 years he died at his residence on January 7, 1958 at the age of 68. He was a retired credit manager of the Olin Mathieson Company, past master of Waskom Lodge 1254, F & AM, a member of the Scottish Rite, American Legion and the Broadmoor Christian Church. Services were held at the Osborn Funeral Home with Rev. Leroy Munyon officiating. Buried in the Forest Park East Cemetery, Shreveport where wife Sadie joined him in 1990. Day is done, God is nigh.
