HOWARD WILLIAM "BILL" SASS
November 24, 1920 ~ December 31, 2017

Howard W. "Bill" Sass was a loyal husband, a great father and a patriotic supporter of his country. He was born in 1920 and raised near Bristolville, Ohio, where he met and fell in love with Wanda Wilson.

The two became high school sweethearts and married in 1943, after he became a pilot in the ARMY Air Corps. Bill was called away and served valiantly in World War II. Among his military honors are a Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross, which he received "for heroism while serving as a pilot on a resupply mission over enemy-occupied France on June 7, 1944."

After the war, Bill returned home to Wanda and they began a family. He also pursued a four-year degree in Mechanical Engineering at Youngstown State University, which helped him to secure a position at the Lockheed Corporation. Bill, Wanda and their young son and daughter moved from Ohio to California in 1952 and soon welcomed another baby girl to the family.

While family was his number one priority, Bill had a long career at Lockheed working closely with the military for 37 years. After many different assignments within the company, he finished out the last years of his career as a Flight Test Engineer for the SR 71 Blackbird project.

Upon retirement, Bill and Wanda moved to La Center, Washington to be near their grandchildren and enjoy their family.

Bill is survived by his son, William Sass; daughter, Merry Woodside; grandchildren, Jason Woodside, Erin Uskoski, Darin Woodside and Lacey Vik; and 6 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Wanda; and their daughter, Holly Sass.

A service was held at Layne's Funeral Home in Battle Ground, Washington on Friday, January 5th, 2018.
