Nancy Marie (Speaker) May, 60, of Midland, died early Monday morning, Jan. 1, 2018 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland. She was born Nov. 27, 1957 in Midland, daughter of Ida (Olson) Speaker of Midland and the late Jack Speaker. Nancy was a 1976 graduate of H.H. Dow High School. On Sept. 8, 1978 she married Patrick May of Midland. Against all odds due to Nancy's health they had their only child, Michael.
Nancy was a severe diabetic since early childhood. Anyone that knew Nancy knew of her health struggles but also knew that her disease never slowed her down. Spending time with her family and cooking for everyone, anytime was at the top of her enjoyment list. But being able to spend time with her grandsons (Carson and Gavin) and sharing her love of cooking and baking with them is what she truly cherished. Her grandsons were her pride and joy.
Nancy was employed for 25 years as a waitress at the Holiday Inn in Midland and held the position of Head Captain at Justine's and Café Edwards. Working as a waitress was something she thoroughly enjoyed. Being the social butterfly Nancy was, waitressing allowed her to meet many people. Nancy never met a stranger that she didn't become fast friends with. Her smile and lightheartedness along with her pranks and joking made it difficult to not be happy when Nancy was around.
Surviving in addition to her mother, Ida is her son, Michael (Shannon) May of Midland; grandsons, Carson and Gavin May; and her sister, Barbara June Speaker of San Francisco, Calif. Her father, Jack Speaker; and her brother, Lorin Speaker both preceded her in death.
Funeral services for Nancy will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2018 at Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler St., Midland. Father Daniel J. Fox O.F.M. Cap will officiate with private burial to take place later in Larkin Township Cemetery. Nancy's family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. and from 10 a.m. until the service on Friday. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the American Diabetes Association or the University of Michigan Transplant Center.
