Lucy was born June 6, 1927, at Downs, the daughter of Ed L. and Bonnie Scott Simpson. She married Harold L. “Bud” Roberts on June 26, 1948, in Downs. He preceded her in death on March 28, 1994.
Surviving are a daughter, Bonnie (Rich) Lamberth, Humble, Texas; four sons, Randall Roberts, Bloomington; Robin (Cindy) Roberts, Bloomington; Rick (Nancy) Roberts, Bloomington and Ryan (Judy) Roberts, Downs and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Roxanne (Roger) McCannon; her parents; a brother, Clarence “Buck” Simpson; a brother in infancy, Johnny Simpson and two sisters, June Kelly Newman and Ruby Armstrong.
Lucy graduated from Downs High School in 1945. She went on to Illinois State Normal University. From there, she taught school for several years at the Kickapoo Union School in Downs. She raised a family of six and went on to work for over 25 years as an inspector at the Eureka-Williams Co.
She enjoyed attending all the athletic events of her children and grandchildren. Lucy was a gifted singer and competed in high school and college. She enjoyed annual trips to Las Vegas with her husband. She also enjoyed listening to Tom Jones and taking care of many pet cats and dogs through the years. Lucy was a great cook and was known for her legendary Sunday dinners — no one ever left her home hungry.
She was a longtime parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Downs. She enjoyed bingo and being a part of the Evergreen Assisted Living Home in Normal the past several years. Her last residence was at Liberty Village of LeRoy. Also, Lucy enjoyed a 90th birthday celebration dinner and family gathering at the Ozark House Restaurant in June.
