Robert K. Goss, 88, of South Sioux City, formerly of Dakota City, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at Regency Assisted Care Center.
Services will be at 11:00 AM Saturday January 6, 2018 at Salem Lutheran Church (1753 G. Ave) in Dakota City with Rev. Sandra Braasch officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to Saturday's services at the church. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Robert was born August 15, 1929 in Malvern, IA to Corbett and Pearl (Bateman) Goss. As a child they moved to the Sioux City area where he grew up. He married Carmel J. Andersen on August 22, 1948 in Sioux City. He spent the first 10 years of their marriage farming and then in the late 50's and 60's he worked at the Sioux City Stock Yards. During his 25 years there, he owned Quad State Commission Firm for 6 years. He truly enjoyed visiting with all the farmers and traveled many miles in his search to buy livestock. One of his frequent trips was to Plainview, NE. When he noticed the Stock Yards starting to decline, he decided to open up Bob's Boot Shak in South Sioux City where he sold boots but also repaired everything from boots, shoes, purses, to saddles and hockey gloves. He worked there for 25 years before retiring to take up full time woodworking. He was self taught and his passion for it grew so much that he added a work shop to the garage where he built many beautiful pieces, big and small, out of his favorite oak wood. It ranged from crosses, quilt racks and cedar chests to china hutches and curio cabinets. He also built a huge replica of the Salem Lutheran Church to use for their 125th Anniversary celebration. All of the items were made with love as he gave them as gifts to family and friends. He was also an avid Sioux City Musketeer Hockey fan and for 10 years was a host parent to many players. He developed a love for the Sheltie breed dog (miniature collie) and his first dog was named "Tad" and so the name continued for the last 2 puppies that he got. If you saw one you saw the other. He even put a basket on the motorcycle he had so he could take "Tad" to work with him. He is fondly remembered as "Keith" by family.
Robert was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and for many years enjoyed being on the Property Management Committee. He was also a board member. His hobbies over the years included ceramics, camping in Yankton and traveling with the camper to visit family in Colorado and Michigan. Many weekends were spent enjoying the fresh air and the simple life, with family and friends, by either camping or giving rides on his pontoon boat. His love of camping has been passed on to his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his son Roger and wife Janice of Sioux City; a daughter Marilyn Edwards and husband Tom of Cape Coral, Fl; four grandchildren, Sheila Dumdei, Amy Goss, Dr. Ryan Goss , Dr. John Edward; eight great-grandchildren; Ethan and Zachary Dumdei, Cory and Cason Goss, Kaiden, Caleb and Cain Goss, Forrest Edwards; sisters-in-law, Virginia Goss, Joyce Miller and Pauline Andersen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Carmel in 2008, infant daughter Marie, brother JC and sisters Katherine and Pauline.
