John Barber Simms, 89 of Washington County, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2018, at Spring View Hospital in Lebanon. He was a retired professor of English at Clemson University.

He is survived by one sister, Madeleine (Wendell) Grayson of Springfield; three brothers, Leon (Sandy) Simms of Springfield, Phil (Debby) Simms of Cincinnati, and Alex (Vicki) Simms of Princeton; and several nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Mass is 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Springfield with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, and 7-10:15 a.m. at the Hale-Polin-Robinson Funeral Home with a prayer service 7 p.m. Friday.

The family asks that visitors dress appropriately for the cold weather predicted in the forecast.

The Hale-Polin-Robinson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
