There are so many words to describe the extraordinary life of Ivan Franko. He was an accomplished Poet, Writer, Social and Literary Critic, and Journalist. As well as an Economist, and Political Activist. He was well educated for the son of a blacksmith studying a wide variety of subjects. After multiple arrests the secret police kept a close eye on him. He was kicked out of the university for all of his arrests. After his death the same university that kicked him out was renamed after him and is now known as Ivan Franko Lviv State University. He wrote for numerous magazines and newspapers and wrote a great deal of poetry. After finishing his doctoral thesis he was given a position in the history department for Ukranian literature at Lviv University. Living in poverty for much of his life Ivan was unable to provide a proper place for his wife, Olha Khorunzhynska who he married in May of 1886 to live and in 1902 a group of students from the University along with the help of a few activists from Lviv purchased a house for them where they spent the rest of their lives. This house is now the site of a museum dedicated to his life. When he died he was so poor that when people came to pay their respects he was only covered with a old torn sheet. The clothes that he was buried in were paid for by his friends. There is also a city in Western Ukraine formally known as Stanislaviv that in 1962 was renamed Ivano-Frankivsk. The younger generation refer to this town as San Francisco.
