Sgt. Jason W. Swiger of South Portland, Maine graduated from South Portland High school in 2000 and would often go back to the school to talk with military history classes. Jason had wanted to join the Army ever since he was a boy and watched paratroopers training while visiting his uncle, a former member of the 82nd Airborne. A bit of a renaissance man he was a singer, a dancer and a drummer. He loved music, and he and his sister, Becka, enjoyed going out to sing karaoke every time he was home from Iraq. His favorite song to perform was the Steve Miller Band's "The Joker" he was known by the same name among friends and family for his humor and constant pranks. Jason was originally buried at Brooklawn Cemetery in Portland near his grandfather, but his family decided to move his body when they learned that Calvary had a section set aside for war veterans. He was re-interred in August 2007. Jason had been married only a few months before he left for Iraq to Alanna Regan Swiger. He was killed in Iraq during his fourth tour to the region as one of four soldiers who left the protection of their Humvee to hand out candy to a group of Iraqi children when a suicide bomber on a scooter detonated an explosive. He was 24.
