The Rev. Edward O. Hale, 72, of Ashland, passed away Saturday, March 24, 2007, at Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus.

He was born Oct. 29, 1934, in Cleveland. Following his graduation from high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps during the Korean War, serving from 1952 to 1955. He attended Baldwin-Wallace College and the University of Kentucky, and he was a graduate of Lexington Theological Seminary in June 1975. During his years at seminary, he was the minister at Orangeburg Christian Church in Orangeburg, Ky. He then was the minister for 5½ years at Remsen Christian Church in Medina and during this time he also was serving as District 3 president for the Christian Church.

In October 1983, he became the senior pastor of First Christian Church in Ashland and was there for nine years. After Ashland, he also served as pastor at First Congregational Church of Sullivan Township for more than five years and he also served two interim ministry pastorates in Amherst at St. Peter's United Church of Christ and Amherst Congregational Church.

Rev. Hale was a 32nd-degree Mason and a member of Ashland Masonic Lodge 151, a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus. He held life memberships in the American Legion, AMVETS and the Ashland Elks Lodge 1360. He was also a special deputy and chaplain of the Ashland County Sheriff's Department. He was a former board member of the United Way of Ashland County, the Domestic Violence Shelter of Mansfield and he and his wife served as directors of the Ashland County chapter of the Special Wish Foundation.

He is survived by his wife, Carol L. (nee Hicks), whom he married Sept. 14, 1956; daughter, Lynn E. Myers; son, Daniel R. (Tamara) Hale; grandchildren, Robert Eugene Myers III, Jon Edward Myers, Luke Ethan Myers, Sarah Lynn Hale, Rachel Elizabeth Hale, Edward Daniel Hale and Rebekah Ann Hale, all of Ashland; sisters, Eva Drews, Susan Beneisek, Cora Martha Eldridge and Kathryn Winson; and brothers, Donald A. Reed Sr. and Mark A. Reed.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Harriett A. Reed; parents, Ken and Evelyn Reed; an infant son; sister, Elizabeth Bridge; and brothers, Arthur Buell and Harley Utter Sr.

Service: 3 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Brethren Church, 1144 W. Main St., Ashland, with the Rev. Scot Myers officiating.

Burial 11 a.m. Thursday at Butternut Ridge Cemetery in Lorain County, where the Ashland Veterans Honor Guard will participate in full military graveside services.
