They leave behind their children Eloy Hernandez of Big Bend, Texas; Tomas Hernandez of San Antonio, Texas; Lilly Portillo of Big Bend; and Belinda Hernandez of San Antonio; along with seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. They have also both been parent figures to many others in and around the town of Marathon, Texas.

Claudia was born in Sheffield, New Mexico, in 1942. She leaves behind her surviving siblings Eloisa Ortiz, Emilia Reyes, Valerio Gabaldon, Mary Macias and Toni Bustamonte. Claudia was a homemaker, and loved the cooking channel and helping others to cook as well. Johnny retired from Big Bend National Park maintenance after 30 years of service. They were both were to give the shirts off their backs and speak to all about their faith in the Lord, first guiding their children to know him, then their friends, and finally branching out to the community.
