Patricia Susan Long nee Showalter peacefully passed away at 87 years old Saturday morning, December 30. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Long, who had been the love of her life since childhood, her sister Marion Costello, and brother William Showalter.

She is survived by her four children (Janet Armistead, Thomas Long Jr, Sarah Steel, and Wayne Long) and their spouses (Joy Long, Paul Steel, and Kim Long), eight grandchildren (Matt Armistead, Lindsay Hellman, Mary Kreider, Ruth Mock, Bobby McClure, William Long, Alex Steel, and Cassandra Righter) and their spouses (Sera Matthew, Clayton Hellman, James Kreider, Jack Mock, and Kristin McClure), and her great-grandchildren (Logan Hellman, Anand Armistead, Briana McClure, Aiden Kreider, and Kayleigh McClure).

Pat was born May 3, 1930 in Clarksburg, WV where she also graduated with the class of 1948 from Washington-Irving High School. She went on to earn her bachelor''degree in Mathematics and graduate degree in Philosophy at West Virginia University. She retired from WVU having both worked in the advising center and as an instructor in philosophy. She had a wonderful facility for making even the most abstract concepts of mathematical logic easy to understand. (All four of her children followed in her footsteps and graduated from WVU as well.)

Pat had many passions reaching beyond academia. The first of those was her family, who will feel the loss of their matriarch deeply. The pleasure of any endeavor or interest was multiplied when shared with her family. Another passion would be books and reading. It would be impossible to count the number of people who came to her for book recommendations. She read widely and prided herself on knowing which book would be just right for someone to read. She corresponded with authors like George Chesbro and her friend Barbara Mertz. Watch out Agatha and Dorothy Sayers, Patricia will surely be looking to discuss your books with you! She was also a movie aficionado. Even as a child, it was a weekly treat to go down to the Robinson Grand theater with her sister Marion. And it just wouldn't be right to leave out shopping at Gabes. Even when she was unable to walk, she was up for being pushed through the store in her wheelchair looking for a deal on something for one of the grandchildren or great-grandchildren.

Pat and her husband, Tom, traveled much of Europe together with her sister- and brother-in-law, Susie and Richard Whiteman. Various kids, grandkids, and nephews would tag along, but those four were almost always together on any trip that would require a passport.

Her intellect was the sharpest of anyone in the family's acquaintance. Before there was Google, there were landline phone calls to Pat asking everything from "Which movie had the purple car and a big Queen Anne house?" to how to translate a Latin phrase. She always seemed to know.

Her love, wit, and levity will leave a void in our lives. She will be deeply, deeply missed.
