Anne Robertson Frye Caudill, 93, of New Albany, Indiana, passed away peacefully December 28, 2017, ending a long and highly productive life lived to the fullest with much kindness, generosity and grace.
Anne was born March 6, 1924, in Cynthiana, KY, the daughter of Kenneth Frye and Lois Ammerman Frye. She grew up partly in Cynthiana and partly on the family farm in Harrison County, KY, surrounded by a loving, colorful, and extended family.
After a brief stint as a chemist with Standard Oil during WWII, she met her husband, the late Harry M. Caudill (d.1990) at the University of Kentucky. They married in 1946. She worked to establish the Home Demonstration Agency in Montgomery County, KY while he finished law school. She moved with him to his home town, Whitesburg, KY, where he practiced law until 1976, then established and taught an Appalachian Studies program at the University of Kentucky. Besides assisting in the law practice, raising gardens, and raising three children, she assisted in writing 10 books, the best known being "Night Comes to the Cumberlands", also hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles, speeches by her husband, and television appearances. She was especially proud of her work in the takeover of United Mine Workers hospitals (later part of Appalachian Regional Hospitals) in Eastern Kentucky by the Presbyterian Church, averting closure or severe curtailment of services, and in establishing the Letcher County public library, now the Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library.
In later years, Mrs. Caudill moved to New Albany to be near her children and their families. She was an active member in the Daughters of the American Revolution, Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Church, Sierra Club, Nature Conservancy, and numerous other organizations. Possessed of a sharp and penetrating mind, which remained undimmed to the end, she made life lively for all who knew her. Late in life, she was the subject of a semi-biography by Terry Cummins of New Albany, "The Caudills of the Cumberlands" based on her countless stories, and a film "Room To Fly" by Lee Pennington of Louisville. She also narrated a film "Harry Caudill: A Man of Courage" by Jerry Deaton of Frankfort, KY.
Anne is survived by her children, James K. Caudill (Jane) of Louisville, Diana Grace (Jack) of New Albany, and Harry F. Caudill of Lexington; grandchildren, Lee Grace of New Albany and Tiara Caudill of Lexington; and great grandsons, Hunter and Noah Grace and Benjamin Caudill. . She is predeceased by her husband; her brother, Robert Frye; and her grandson, Patrick Grace.
A Memorial Service will be held January 27, 2018 at Kraft Funeral Service, 708 E. Spring Street, New Albany, IN at 1:00 pm, visitation beginning at 11:00 am. A reception will follow the memorial service at the funeral home.
