Verich, Demetrio
Demetrio “Butch” Verich, 84, of Laona, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Butch was the husband of Mary (Rathborne) Verich and son of Peter and Annetta Verich, Laona, Wisconsin.
Demetrio, the youngest of six, graduated from Laona High School in 1950. Having grown up with a passion for flying he joined the Navy and was commissioned following flight school in Pensacola, Florida. He flew through the transition from propellers to jets piloting nearly every fighter aircraft type in the Navy’s inventory during his twenty year military career, which included combat over Vietnam where he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for air gallantry, numerous combat Air Medals, and two Purple Hearts for injuries sustained while ejecting from his F-8 Crusader after being struck by enemy fire.
While on deployment to the Vietnam theater of operations Butch visited Hong Kong where he met Mary who was also visiting on duty with Qantas Airlines. A long distance courtship resulted in a wedding in Sydney, Australia on November 25, 1967. The couple was planning to renew vows in Sydney this November in celebration of their fiftieth wedding anniversary.
Upon retiring from the Navy, Butch and Mary moved to South Bend, Indiana where Butch graduated with honors from the University of Notre Dame with a doctorate in Law and master’s in Business Administration.

Active in the community where he was raised and where he raised his children, Butch served many years as Forest County District Attorney. He was also active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, including service as post commander, and a member of the Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus.

Butch was an active member of St. Leonard parish in Laona where he was a devoted lector and altar server.

More recently, in between trips to visit his grandchildren around the world, Butch enjoyed gathering with retired law enforcement officers for breakfast in Laona, or spinning tales of aviation glory with his “hangar mates” in Antigo and Rhinelander. Butch continued flying after the Navy and loved to flash the wings of his Cessna as he flew low over Silver Lake and Camp 5, just to show Mary that he was okay.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, to whom he was married for 50 years. Butch and Mary shared many fond memories together traveling and hosting big family celebrations. He is also survived by his sons and daughter, Andrew (Viktoria), and their children Dmitri, Anastasia, Aleksandra, and Nikita (Moscow, Russia); Nicole (Doug) Browne, and their children Douglas Jr., Madeleine, Mary, and Dominic (Reno, Nevada); Matthew (Allison), and their children Sofia, Matthew Jr., and Anna (Alexandria, Virginia); Daniel (Jenny), and their children Jacob and Carson (San Antonio, Texas); John (Jillayne), and their children John Jr., Francesca, Alexander, Vivian, and Stella (Winneconne, Wisconsin); Joseph (Kaia), and their children Luke, Isaac, and Elizabeth (Rhinelander, Wisconsin); Butch is also survived by sisters Duna (Verich) Combs (Harold, Kentucky) and Stana (Verich) Piazza (Virginia Beach, Virginia); and many loved nieces and nephews. Demetrio was preceded in death by his first son, Peter Anthony Verich; his parents Peter and Annetta; and siblings Danilo, Alexander, and Malina.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at St. Leonard Catholic Church with Reverend John Cerkas officiating. Burial to follow at Laona Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at St. Leonard Catholic Church, Laona and one hour prior to services on Wednesday.
