John was born October 21, 1949 in Charleston, to Reece and Doris (Goff) Bell. He married Patricia Myers on June 16, 1967. John received his B.S. Degree from Eastern Illinois University in 1972.

Surviving are his wife Patricia; sister: Martha (Lloyd) Van Dyke of Vail, AZ; sister-in-law: Carol Bell of Charleston, IL; children: Michael (Beth) Bell, Brandon (Tammy) Bell, Mindy (Josh) Garrett, and John (Bonnie) Bell. Grandchildren: Kayley Bell, Taylor Garrett, Reece Bell, Colton Bell, Wyatt Garrett, Cameron Garrett, Luke Bell, Megan Garrett, Aedan McMechan, Dylan Bell, and Landon Bell. He was preceded in death by his parents: Reece Bell and Doris Meekins; step-fathers: Dr. Eugene Waffle and William Meekins; and brothers: Robert and Rex “Butch”.

For 34 years, John co-owned Bell’s Flower Corner with his wife Patricia. John adored having both a job that he loved and one that allowed him to work every day, side by side with his high school sweetheart. He enjoyed his Sunday morning golf games, watching westerns, swimming, going on walks, playing fantasy football, and watching sporting events, including cheering for the Cubs and most of all his grandchildren. John was an avid reader and was a student of history with a particular passion for the Civil War. He loved to visit historical locations, especially Civil War sites.

John took great pleasure in serving the community he so loved. He passionately served on the Coles County Board, including as Chairman of the Board (2009-2010), and also served on the Charleston Recreation Board. He was a member of the Charleston Jaycees, and a member and officer of the Elks Club and Moose Lodge. He enjoyed being a Cub Scout Den Master as well as coaching Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball.

John always considered his crowning achievements as being a devoted husband and a loving father. He was particularly proud of his grandchildren and loved attending their various activities. John was a great example to all of them and he leaves a legacy as a compassionate, kind, understanding, and loving husband, father, and grandfather.

John often told his children and grandchildren, “You can’t always get what you want.” In the end though, he had just what he wanted, his loving family at his side, with him until his last breath.
