Ms. Mays was a much-beloved sister and aunt, and a wonderful and big-hearted friend to all who had the good fortune to meet her during her 77 years. Ms. Mays especially cherished her three siblings and truly reveled in the joys provided by the children and grandchildren of her siblings. In recent years, Ms. Mays provided extraordinary love and daily in-home care for her older sister, Beverely Mays Anderson, who lived with Ms. Mays for several years until her death in November. Ms. Anderson’s daughter April Anderson relocated to Memphis in 2014 to help Ms. Mays with the day-to-day activities of providing in-home care to Ms. Anderson. When Ms. Anderson passed away, April stayed continued to provide love and in-home care for Ms. Mays until the week of her passing. Many friends and family members visited Ms. Mays during her short stay in hospice care, including her brother, Kit Sanford Mays MD, who sang hymns to her in the hours before she passed.

Ms. Mays attended Humboldt (TN) High School, and graduated in 1959 from the University of Tennessee Medical Units with a certificate in radiologic technology. She graduated two years later from UTMU with advanced certification in radiologic technology. Ms. Mays spent her professional life as a radiologist, co-authoring a textbook in radiology technique. She served as director of the Huntsville (AL) Hospital School of Radiologic Technique and as professor of Radiologic Technology at Southwest Tennessee Community College in Memphis. In the early 1970s, Ms. Mays accepted a plaque of appreciation from then-Alabama Gov. George Wallace on behalf of the HHSCT for enabling its students to average “higher grades in the examinations than those of 13 other institutions in Alabama offering the training,” according to media reports at the time.

She is preceded in death by her parents Haywood and Frances Mays, and her beloved sister Beverely. She is survived by her twin brother William Haywood Mays; her brother Kit Sanford Mays MD; and more than one dozen nieces/great nieces and nephews and great-nephews who will miss her very much.

Visitation will take place at noon, Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017, at Bodkin Funeral Home in Milan, TN, located at 2000 S. First St., followed by the funeral at 1 p.m. Her brother Kit will serve as officiant for the service. Ms. Mays will be laid to rest next to her parents and her sister Beverely at nearby Oakwood Cemetery immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Ms. Mays’ name to the American Cancer Society.
