Joe Whitaker of Fairfax, VA passed away on December 22, 2017.

He was born in Wiesbaden, Germany. He grew up moving around the U.S. and other countries while his parents were part of the U.S. Air Force. He graduated in engineering from Georgia Tech and later earned MBA and MPA degrees. He was also a graduate of the U.S. Army War College.

Joe had a long and distinguished career with the U.S. Army. After serving for three years on active duty as a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officer, he continued for 23 additional years in the Army Reserve. After active duty, Joe embarked on an impressive federal civilian employee career with the Army, rising through the ranks, and at the time of his retirement was the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for lnstallations and Housing.

Joe enjoyed traveling golf and was an avid Georgia Tech supporter and fan.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan Aspinwall and 2 grandsons-Matt and Ben, his brother Kenneth Whitaker, and 2 sisters-Sharon Meadows and Claudia Snyder.

Services will be held Sunday, February 18th at 11:00am at Wike Cemetery.
