Joe Earl Durham was born June 13, 1943 in Butler, Freestone County. He was the second child born to Carlton Durham Sr. and Bertha Allen Durham.
He attended elementary school at Frozy-Echols and graduated from Woodland High School in Mexia in 1963. Later he attended welding school.
He was first employed at Delta Steel, and he also worked at Dallas Fabrication until he was injured.
Joe was married to Thelma Perry, and two daughters were born from this union. After this marriage dissolved, Joe united in holy matrimony with Melinda Jean Gilmore, who preceded him in death. No children were born to this union.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Worth Ferrell; three brothers, Carlton Durham, Jimmy Durham and Norman Ferrell, and one sister, Maydell Robinson.
