She is preceded in death by her parents, Jesse Thomas Exum and Tommie Claiborne Exum, her husband, Ray G. Payne, and her daughter, Rebecca Payne Shelby.
She is survived by her son, Robert of Tullahoma, TN, grandchildren Russell Payne of Nashville and Laura Chaudhry of Franklin, TN, and Trib Burris of TX, two great-grandchildren, two nephews, and one niece.
She was graduated from East High School in 1936 and was a long-time member of Lockeland Baptist Church, most recently a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Hendersonville, TN.
She was a faithful homemaker, business assistant for B&R Home Repairs, and Lord’s servant who routinely took the neighborhood children to church in hopes that they, too, may know Him. She was also known for her knitting abilities, homemade chocolate chip cookies and pickles, routine trips to Boutique Coffers, and feline hospitality.
Her private graveside service was held on Thursday, May 3 at Spring Hill Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to The Church at Lockeland Springs in Nashville or Trinity Baptist Church in Hendersonville. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the congregation at Trinity Baptist Church, the staff at Stoneridge Farms apartments, and the doctors and nurses at TriStar Hendersonville Medical Hospital.
The family also wishes to discommend the abhorrent act of depravity rendered to Miss Betty as she lay dying by Marynelle Laster, a stranger to us.
