Joel Sterling Gilbert, 82, better known as Papa Joel to his grandkids went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on 12/4/17.

He was born in Wichita, KS on Aug. 29, 1935 to Mary & Sterling Gilbert. He was raised in Tonkawa, OK. He received his Ph.D. from OU in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in 1965. Joel became staff scientist at LANL in 1970 where he worked in weapons, lasers, and reactor safety. He was proud that he came from a OK pioneer family. He was a longstanding member of Hoffmantown Church.

Joel is survived by his wife Evelyn, of 58 years, whom he referred to as "Earth Angel"; sons, Brian (Terry) and Mark (Amy); grandchildren, Holly, Christine (Andrew), Chase, William, Spencer, Audrey, Edward, & Sarah; brother James (Marilyn).

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon and his parents.

Joel will always be remembered as a man who loved the Lord, for his dry sense of humor, for his loyalty and integrity , and for his dedication and love for his family.

Memorial service will be held Jan. 6, 2018 at 11 am at Hoffmantown Church.
