COLEMAN, TX — A single vehicle crash near Coleman claimed the life of one man Wednesday afternoon. According to the Texas DPS, Darrell Glen Phillips, 64, of Coleman was driving east on FM 568. At approximately one mile east of Coleman, Phillips veered left across the westbound lane and off the north side of the roadway. His 1999 Chevy pickup struck the fence, and then barrowed through a field before slamming into a tree. DPS is still investigating the crash, though they did report Phillips was not wearing a seatbelt. Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. DPS reported that the crash happened at 2:28 p.m. Wednesday. The weather was cloudy and the roadway was dry. The speed limit where the crash happened was 60 mph.

Darrell Phillips, age 64, of Coleman, died Wednesday, December 27, 2017. There will be a visitation for family and friends from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Friday, December 29, at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman. Memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Marvin Hale officiating and assisted by Rev. Gary Boyd.

Darrell Phillips was born November 20, 1953 in Coleman, Texas, a son of Harold Phillips and Katie Pitts Phillips. He grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School in 1973. He attended Howard Payne University and Tarleton State University. On March 9, 1976 he married Vicky Alexander in Oklahoma and she preceded him in death on August 24, 1995. Darrell was a truck driver, a career that he loved, for 38 years, until having to retire due to ill health. He enjoyed working cattle and riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Coleman.

Survivors include his daughter, Kathreyn Harris of Stockdale, Texas; two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Glen; two step-daughters, Crystal Wilcox and Karla Olivas both of Big Spring; his mother, Katie Phillips of Coleman; two sisters, Glynda Phillips of Coleman and Helen Walters and husband Leslie of Coleman; two brothers, Keith Phillips and wife Donna of Coleman, Mark Phillips and wife Beatrice of Santa Anna; nieces and nephews, Charlese Harris and husband T. J., Janna Rode and husband Josh, Stephen Phillips and wife Rachelle, Ben Phillips and wife Justine.

In addition to his wife, Darrell was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles and Clem Pitts and Lee and Mamie Phillips; and his father, Harold Phillips.
