Martin Rigger married the widow Jane/Jennie/Johanna Quinlan Hennessey in Palmyra, New York, on 22 January 1870. They had three daughters together -- Mary Elizabeth "Mollie," Sera "Sarah/Sadie", and Jane "Jennie." Martin's wife died in February 1881 when their youngest daughter Jane was almost three years old. Jane's father, left to care for her two older sisters, gave up Jane for adoption to Margaret Kennedy and William Sholes.

In 1910, Martin's spinster sister Maria passed away in Germany and left "a small fortune" to his three daughters. Before the money could be awarded to them, Jane Rigger Sholes had to be found and reunited with her sisters. Through the efforts of a local Catholic nun, Jane/Jennie was found and the sisters were reunited in Rochester on 12 March 1910. It was then that Jane Rigger learned who her biological father was. The event was recounted in the Star-Gazette, Elmira, NY, p 7, on that day.
