Jo was born on October 1, 1920 and grew up in the country around Shipman in Nelson County, VA. Her father worked on the railroad which also ran in front of her home. Jo graduated as a registered nurse from Blue Ridge Sanatorium in Charlottesville, VA and went to work as a nurse at Alexandria Hospital in Alexandria, VA during World War II. After that she worked for a private cardiac physician and later for a group of pediatricians in Falls Church, VA. Jo married Charles Mell Young, a civil engineer, and they lived in Falls Church, VA, Pineville, NC, and later retired to Amherst, VA. She later lived in Manassas, VA. Jo enjoyed gardening, and served as President of the Falls Church Garden Club, the Falls Church Chrysanthemum Society and the Pineville North Carolina Garden Club. She was certified as a judge for juried flower shows and also for Japanese Flower arranging. Jo was always active in the United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School and led the Women’s Circle Groups. She liked to sew and do crafts and paint. Jo also loved her daschund dogs, Greta, Molly and Gracie.
Jo is survived by her children Victoria Young (Charlie) and Sara Jo Chester (Steve), both of VA, and Charles Young (Sally) of FL; nine grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles; sister Dell; and brother Fred.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 30 at Amherst Cemetery with a reception following immediately at Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Amherst, VA.
