He was a politician and functionary of the KPD and the SED . In March 1955 he was sentenced by the Supreme Court of the GDR to eight years in prison because he was the only member of the Politburo and the Central Committee of the SED for the establishment of a Jewish nation state and compensation payments to survivors of the Holocaust .
