Anna Merle Norton Roach, Merriam, KS passed away on December 22, 2017. Mrs. Roach was born September 10, 1922 at the farm home of her parents, John & Hilma Engberg Norton, Bucklin, MO. She grew up with her older brother, the late C.S.M. John W. Norton, Jr., whom she adored. She graduated from Bucklin High School in 1939 at the age of 16. She was a member of the Four-H-Club.
She earned her first 60 hours from Truman University, Kirksville, MO and her Bachelor of Science degree from University of Central MO, Warrensburg, MO.
Mrs. Roach knew at an early age she wanted to be a teacher when she tried to teach her dolls how to read. Her teaching career began at Cash School, Linn Co., MO, the one room school house she and her brother had attended. She taught one year at Warren School before becoming a third grade teacher at Park School, Marceline, MO. This is the school Walt Disney attended before the family moved to K.C., MO.
Anna Merle and Phm 1/C Gleamond Roach were married May 27th, 1945 when he returned from service in the South Pacific area during World War II. They spent the remaining time of his service in Massachusetts While he served at the Chelsea Naval Base. Anna Merle worked as an inspector at fluorescent Light Factor.
They were blessed with two sons, Carl Norton Roach and Terry Alan Roach.
The family moved to Kansas City, KS in 1951. In 1955 Anna Merle began her 27 years of teaching third grade at Oak Grove School in the Turner Unified District. She was an honorary Life member of Oak Grove School's P.T.A.
Formerly Anna Merle was a member of the Busklin, MO Christian Church and taught the High School girl's class. When she moved to Kansas City, KS she became a member of the Maple Hill Baptist Church, over 50 years ago.
After retiring, Mrs. Roach taught the 3rd & 4th grade Sunday School classes and served as chairman of the Board of Christian Education for several years. She did volunteer work for Cancer Action. She enjoyed her family, crossword puzzles and traveling. She visited many states including Alaska and two tours of Hawaii.
Anna Merle was a seventy-three year member of Chapter BE. P.E.O Alpha Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, a teacher's honorary sorority, Kansas & WY County's Association of Retired School Personnel and the Maple Hill Baptist Church.
Mrs. Roach was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother, aunts & uncles. She is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law. Carl & Judy Roach and Terry & Rosy Roach, five grand-children Shane, Angie, Shana, G.G. and Terry II, several great-grandchildren, a niece, nephews, cousins and life time of friends whom she treasured highly.
