Manitowoc - Robert J. Bast, age 80, a resident of Manitowoc, entered eternal life on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at St. Mary's Home in Manitowoc.
Bob was born on November 8, 1937 in Manitowoc. He was the son of the late John and Hildegard Fuchs Bast. Bob was a graduate of Lincoln High School with the class of 1956. Following high school he served his country with the United States Army and then returned back to Manitowoc after his honorable discharge. Bob became employed with Mirro Aluminum and later with Eck Foundry from where he retired in 2005. He was also employed with Manitowoc Pattern for many years. Bob was one of the founders of Eck Foundry Credit Union. On November 28, 1975 he married Frances M. Leick in Manitowoc. She preceded him in death on June 16, 2014. Bob and his late wife Franny, in years prior to retiring, worked on building their future retirement home from the ground up in Sister Bay and completed their building project after a period of ten years. After Bob retired in 2005, the couple moved into their home in Sister Bay and became permanent residents there. While living in Sister Bay they became members of the Stella Maris Catholic Church. In 2016 Bob moved back to Manitowoc to be closer to family due to health reasons. Bob was a member of CUNA Mutual. He enjoyed camping, taking rides on his pontoon boat on the bay of Green Bay, many trips to Florida and just traveling in general. Bob was known for being able to make anything grow and he loved gardening.
He is survived by six children: Deborah (Jim) Webb, Manitowoc; Jeff (Mary) Bast, Menasha; Robert (Tammy ) Bast, Sheboygan Falls; Jamie Broderick, Kiel; Lori (Nick) Kaye, Brookfield; and Sandy Schmitt, Hubertus; six grandchildren who were very special to him: Ryan (Katie) Bast, Sophie and Sam Bast, Melina Bast, Matt and Morgan Schmitt; two special great grandsons : Nolan and Tanner; one brother: Donald (Judy) Bast, Shorewood; one sister: Marilyn Saduske, Two Rivers; many loving nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents: John and Hildegard Fuchs; wife: Frances; and one sister: Shirley Cisler.
Memorial services will be held 6 p.m. on Friday, January 5, 2018 at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home. Officiating will be Deacon Alan Boeldt. Cremation has taken place at the Harrigan Parkside Crematory and Chapel with burial of Bob's cremated remains to be at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home on Friday, January 5, 2018 from 4 p.m. until the time of services at 6 p.m. Military rites will be accorded at the funeral home following the memorial service by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Otto Oas Post #659 with a dinner to follow at the Harrigan Parkside Gathering Center located on the south property of the funeral home.
