She was the daughter of Joel Smith and Nancy A. Beam.

Before 1850 in Michigan she married Ira Allen McBain. His parents are not known yet.

Their children were Albert Allen, Gordon, Adele, Henry Sampson, Roderick/Rodney, and Elmer Ellsworth.

Her husband died on Feb 18, 1875 in CA and is buried there in the Orland I.O.O.F. cemetery.

On Oct 3, 1875 in Colusa, CA she married John Walker Deering. He was born about 1815 in Kentucky. I don't know his parents names. Document recorded in Colusa Co.-Marriages-Book B-Page 200.

Her husband, John, died on Nov 16, 1879 in Orland, CA and is also buried in the Orland I.O.O.F. cemetery.

Residence Abt. 1885 • Modoc- Per her son Elmers obituary he moved to Adin, Modoc Co. with his mother about 13 years before his death. It appears she moved back to Orland after his death in 1898. In 1905 she lived in South Dakota with son Albert; in 1910 she lived in Colusa, CA with nephew Emmanuel B. Kesselring, as a boarder in the Hotel Royal that she used to manage. In 1910 Melissa was 82 years old, and died some time after that.

Have not been able to find any information on son Roderick (Rodney) McBain. The last record was Roderick, Elmer and Melissa living in Red Bluff, Tehama County, California in the 1880 Census and with them was an 8 year old "grandaughter" Ella Brown who we finally found out was actually Adelle "Addie" McBain Knapps daughter with her husband Hiram Knapp. Melissa was very upset with Hiram and the way her daughter, Adelle, died and she took off with their daughter Melissa Margaret Knapp to keep her safe. In the census it listed Rodericks and Elmers last names in error..as Deering.

The only way we found where Melissa was buried was because of fellow McBain researcher, Pam, contacting me on Ancestry and in discussing the family I happen to mention Deering. After that she sent me documents and connected me with other family (namely-Melissas Great Grand Daughter) that helped everything fall into place more than I ever could have imagined since we still cannot find recorded documents about Melissas death. Thank you Pam. And Thank you my friend Shirley Mitchell for setting up the Memorials.

(Adele died two months after Della was born of peritonitis. Family stories say that her mother Melissa took the took children to live with her because she was angry about how Addie had died. In 1880 she had Della with her in CA, listed as Ella Brown, grand daughter. We have never found where Maggie was between when Adele died in 1876 and 1891 when she married in CA. We do know she wasn't with her father, who was living in Ohio with his new wife and parents and his new son Clarence.)
