Kenneth Lorell Shrum was born to Thomas Eugene (Gene) and Florence Casebeer Shrum on May 9, 1931, in Roseburg, Oregon. He passed peacefully at his home in Glide on December 11, 2017.

Ken married Marilyn Ida Myers on December 23, 1956, and they enjoyed almost 61 years together. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Steve Shrum, and his lady, Andrea Frost of Portland; a daughter, Laura Anne Shrum of Glide; two brothers, Thomas and David Shrum of Roseburg, and a sister, Shirley Melvin of Glide.

A daughter, Mary Cecile Shrum, and his parents preceded him.

Ken graduated from Glide High School in 1948, and then enrolled in the US Navy in the fall of 1950. He sailed twice to the Pacific Island of Guam, where he served as one of the Seabees.

After his discharge, he enrolled at Oregon State College in 1955, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1960. He worked in the wood processing division of several sawmills around Oregon before returning his family to the Roseburg/Glide area where he worked for Sun Studs until age 58, and spent the rest of his 30 years enjoying retirement.

Ken belonged to several groups, was a Master Mason as well as a member of Royal Arch, he also belonged to the Elks Club and contributed to several local organizations. He was very active in local cemetery boards, especially the Wimberly Cemetery in Glide where generations of Shrums are buried.

Ken was very active in the Douglas County Historical Society and was chairman for several years. He was instrumental in bringing the society into the twentieth century and saw to it they had a storage building on the grounds of Historic Lane House in Roseburg before he retired.

Ken was very interested in his family’s genealogy; his great-grandfather, Thomas E. Shrum, was one of the first settlers in the Glide area. He moved his family to a home his great uncle, Steve Shrum, built in 1928, and completely re-modeled it for his family.

After Ken’s retirement in 1988, he and his daughter, Laura, together hand-crafted a custom built home for her with very little outside help so she’d be close for his and Marilyn’s later years.

A celebration of life potluck will be held at Glide Community Building on Saturday, January 13, 2017, at 2 p.m.
