Mr. Russell Harold Sanders, 80 of Moline, Illinois, formerly of Aledo, Illinois died 5:10 p.m. Saturday, December 23, 2017 at Rosewood Care Center, Galesburg surrounded by his loving family.

He was born August 8, 1937 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Bernie and Dorothy Helen (Widener) Sanders. He married Sharon Balmer in 1959 in Aledo, Illinois.

Surviving are two sons, David (and Patrice) Sanders of Bolingbrook, Illinois and Douglas (and Heather) Sanders of Galesburg, Illinois, two brothers, Bernie O. "Sonny" Sanders of Milan, Illinois and Larry W. Sanders of Milan, Illinois, 3 grandchildren, Tyler Sanders, Maitlyn Sanders and Jamie (and Chad) Palumbo and a great grandchild, Caelan Palumbo. He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Betty Shafer.

Russell graduated from Reynolds High School, Reynolds, Illinois in 1955 where he played basketball, baseball and ran track. He attended St. Ambrose College, Augustana College and Black Hawk College. He was drafted to play baseball for the Detroit Tigers and Cincinnati Reds minor league teams. He later worked for International Harvester in East Moline for over 40 years. He retired in September of 1997. He was a member of Assembly of God Church in Andalusia and Aledo and Edgewood Baptist Church in Rock Island. He enjoyed sports, was an avid golfer and played softball into his 60's.

Russell was very artistic and loved painting and music. For over 40 years was a lead singer and played rhythm guitar in several country and gospel bands. At one time, his band opened for Ernest Tubbs and played at the Grand Ole Opry.

Cremation will be accorded. A Celebration of Life will be 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 2017 at the Soangetaha Country Club, Galesburg. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services of Galesburg is handling arrangements for the family. Memorials may be made to Knox County Humane Society, Guardian Angel Humane Society and the Milan No Kill Animal Shelter and St. Jude's Children's Hospitals.
