Mrs. Sarah Austin Frost, 97, of Dublin, GA, passed away peacefully in her home on Thursday, December 21, 2017. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, December 23, 2017, in the Chapel of Townsend Brothers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Northview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:30 PM until 3:00 PM Saturday at the funeral home.

Sarah Austin was born in Monroe, N.C. to the late John Walkup and Winnie Porter Austin on August 21, 1920. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1936 and received anBachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from Women’s College, UNC Greensboro in 1940. Between 1940-1946, Sarah taught in North Carolina Public schools and served for 2 ½ years in the U.S. Marine Corps; she enlisted in the summer of 1943 and received her honorable discharge at the Marine Corps Air Station, Santa Barbara, CA with the rank of Sargent in December of 1945.

In June of 1947, Sarah received a Master of Arts degree in Teaching Mathematics from Columbia University’s Teacher’s College, after which she taught at the R. J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, NC until June of 1964. For the school year 1953-54, she was awarded a Ford Foundation Fellowship. During this year Sarah observed the use of mathematics in the major cities of the Midwest and East Coast, visiting businesses, industries, government, and many high schools along the way. She wrote a paper about her findings, and presented it at a national conference.

Sarah married Bill Frost in late October of 1953 during her Ford Fellow experience. In the summer of 1964 she moved to Dublin, GA, where she taught at Dublin High School from the fall of 1964 until her retirement in 1985.Upon retirement, Sarah spent most of her time working with her churchand with Georgia Retired Teachers. In 1993 the Dublin Saint Patrick’s Festival named her Senior Citizen of the year, and in 2008 the Dublin Exchange Club honored her with the Book of Golden Deeds.

Sarah is survived by her daughter Betsy Head (Chris) of Roanoke, VA; her son W. A. (Billy) Frost of Dublin, GA; stepdaughter Dr. Jeannette Steeves of Altamonte Springs, FL; grandchildren Austin Frost, Jr. of Dublin, GA;Tori Moore (Kyle) of Birmingham, AL; Abby and Michael Head, both of Roanoke, VA; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews;brother, William Neal Austin of Richmond, VA; sister-in-law Kathy Austin of Greensboro, NC; and brother-in-law Ralph Sullivan of Shelby, NC. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband W.P. (Bill) Frost, her brother Richard Austin, her sister Elizabeth Sullivan, an infant son and an infant grandson.

The family would like to express our grateful appreciation to Home Instead Senior Care’s wonderful staff and CAREGivers(Laverne, Merlene, Cheryl, Pearl, Juanita, Tiffany and Debra) who provided around-the-clock care for the last month of Sarah’s life, and a special thanks to Laverne for being a loyal companion and friend to our mother for the last 5 years. We also wish to thank the caring staff, nurses, and CNA’s at Integrity Hospice for keeping our mother comfortable during her last weeks. Kerri (RN) and Michelle (CNA) were a blessing!
