Elizabeth “Betty” Neely Carper, of Grandview, went to Heaven on December 14, 2017. She was 86 years old.

She was a life- long resident of Raleigh County and lived for almost 70 years at Grandview. She was a member of the Grandview Christian Church. Betty was born at Crow, the youngest child of Homer Cecil Neely Sr. (1898-1956) and Hettie Belle Richmond-Neely (1905-2002). In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, James “Pete” Carper (Deceased); brothers, William “Bill” Joseph Neely (1927-2004) and his wife, Chloe Blackburn-Neely (1931-2013), and Homer Cecil Neely Jr. (Deceased) and his wife, Georgia Brown-Neely (Deceased); sister-in-law, Mary “Trink” Loflin-Carper (Deceased); brother in law, Winfred Maddy (Deceased); and special cousins.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 67 years, James Kenneth Carper (B. 1930) whom she married on May 27, 1949 in Beckley, Raleigh County, WV (per WV Marriage License Register, Raleigh County, WV, 1949, Page 274, Application Date: May 23, 1949); daughter, Lynda Carper-Gilkeson and her husband, Bernard Gilkeson of Cross Lanes WV; grandchildren, Kenneth Carper of GA, Stephanie Carper-Barnes and her husband, Michael Barnes of VA, and Nicole Gilkeson of CA; two great granddaughters, Alexandra Barnes and Quinn Barnes; brother-in-law, Robert Carper of AL and sister in law, Margaret Carper-Maddy of MD; daughter-in-law, Brenda Carper-Dunkle and her husband, Tom Dunkle of Scott Depot, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and her special dog, Max.

Betty was the strong and determined center of our family. She was an amazing and beautiful woman inside and out, with a long and wide list of interests and life experiences. Always, she was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was the bookkeeper and manager of their family businesses and was a Licensed Practical Nurse who worked in several area hospitals and medical offices. She loved the woods and water -her pond, mountain, rivers and the ocean. She was known for her fashion and style, but was most happy digging in the dirt to cultivate her extensive flower gardens. She and Jim traveled all over the continent in their motor homes, and her grandchildren have many fond memories of summer vacations with her to beaches and amusement parks. She documented her family adventures through her passion for photography. She traveled across Europe and the Mediterranean. Throughout her life, she gathered an extensive collection of antiques and collectibles including her signature collections of roosters and copper. As her Parkinson’s disease limited her activities, her later years were centered on what mattered most to her: Jim, “the kids”, her home, and Max.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, December 22, 2017 at 2:00 pm in the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow the Grandview Cemetery.
