Edwin E. Goldapp (Buddy), age 90, went to God Monday, December 18, 2017, at the Villa of Corpus Christi South in Corpus Christi, Texas. He died peacefully in his sleep. He was born to Otto and Alma (Martens) Goldapp on the east side of Alice, Texas near the historic site of Collins, Texas which predated Alice.
Edwin was preceded in death by the love of his life, Katherine Jean (Bates) Goldapp. He is survived by his siblings Ottalie Schmidt, and Edith (John) Burris and preceded in death by his brother, Alvin Goldapp. He is survived by his children, James (Jimmy) Goldapp and Gayle (Behrens) Goldapp; Gerald (Jerry) who was preceded in death by his wife, Valarie (Draper) Goldapp and their children Mark and his wife Karen (Brooks) Goldapp and Julie (Goldapp) Lloyd and Paul Lloyd; Mary (Goldapp) Jackson and Hank (Eugene Henry Jackson, Jr.) and their children Trey (Eugene Henry Jackson, III) and Melanie (Moore) Jackson; and Lauren ( Jackson) Harville and Jason Harville; and Judith (Goldapp) and Phil Richey and Judith's children Heather (Howerton) and Greg Friesenhahn, Kathrine Howerton, Trevor Howerton, Justin Howerton, and Taylor Belle Howerton.
There are seven great-grand-children, Luke, Garrett, and Evelyn Jackson, and Matilda and Mabel Harville, and Owen and Shiloh Friesenhahn. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Edwin graduated from William Adams High School in Alice, Texas after his early school years at Lara School. He went to A&M University and joined the Army prior to marrying Katherine Jean Bates. He attended A&I University after their marriage. He completed his education in agriculture at Texas A&M University Kingsville after retiring and was one of five distinguished students.
Edwin worked at Heldt Brothers Trucks for many years starting as billing clerk and retiring as CEO. He continued to farm and ranch as a way to supplement income to support his family and send his children to college.
He was active in Immanuel Lutheran Church and was president of church council and served various positons on the church council. He was a scout master at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was president of the Texas Farm Bureau and was on the board of directors. He was awarded the Texas Farm Bureau Pioneer Award. He was a self-taught historian and avid reader. He was president of the South Texas Historical Society and the South Texas Museum in Alice, Texas. Edwin wrote a history of Alice, Texas and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alice, Texas. He was particularly knowledgeable of the South Texas Spanish Land Grants. He was dedicated to all people in Alice being proud of their heritage and sought to have events that recognized their contribution to the history of Alice.
Edwin enjoyed taking Sunday evening drives when not working cattle. He took his family on many trips of some historical interest and some other surprises due the spontaneity of the trips. He and Katherine travelled to Europe on farm tours several times. After a trip to Omaha, Nebraska for a Goldapp family reunion, he met another Edwin Goldapp and corresponded until the Nebraska Edwin died.
Edwin loved his family and his refrigerator became a repository of the grand and great-grandchildren's pictures. His many photo albums reflect his dedication to his family memories and their importance to his life. He will be greatly missed but presents a life that was full and well lived.
Funeral Service will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow at Alice Cemetery. Refreshments will follow interment at Immanuel Lutheran Church.
