Davey, Freda (nee Bouvier) May 1, 1933 – December 14, 2017, aged 84 years of Roblin, formerly of San Clara, Leaf Rapids and Togo passed peacefully after a valiant struggle at the Roblin District Health Centre.
Freda was born in San Clara in 1933 to Leon and May (Carriere) Bouvier. She was raised on her parent’s family farm in San Clara along with her seven siblings. She attended school in San Clara and later at Ste. Rose Du Lac Convent in Ste. Rose, Manitoba. Eventually, Freda and Gordon were married on November 7, 1950. (Gordon passed May 1925 - Sept 2012). Together they had thirteen children Doug (Cynthia) Davey of Flin Flon, Manitoba, Ed (Louise) Davey of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Jocelyne (Dave) Derman of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Dennis (Zak) Tanner-Davey of Victoria, B.C, Sandra (Lawrence) Beck of Flin Flon, Manitoba, Katie (Lorne) Jasper of Hinton, Alberta, Bob Davey of Togo, Saskatchewan, Pam Davey of Red Deer, Alberta, Richard (Pam) Davey of Bentley, Alberta, Janet Davey of Red Deer, Alberta, Jason Davey of Red Deer, Alberta. She was a beloved Grandmother to Thirty-Five Grandchildren, Thirty-Two Great Grandchildren and One Great-Great Granddaughter. A special sister to Anita Dixon of San Clara, Lionel Bouvier of San Clara, Pricilla Kowalishen of Calgary Alberta, Alva Bouvier of Roblin.
She baked, made bread, sewed, patched clothes and drove the ‘Orange Blossom Special’ when she had to. She was the family barber and soon became the village barber. Our cousins and neighbours began lining up too and between tears and laughter everybody got a trim. She made her daughter’s wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, and stitched school clothes, party dresses and sewed for many other family and friends. Once Freda retired from splitting core in the mine in Leaf Rapids they moved back to Togo and participated in San Clara community events. Eventually she started making quilts for her grandchildren and sadly she was working on her last baby blanket for her first great-great-grandchild when she was called by her Saviour.
When she wasn’t baking, sewing or working on puzzles she kept herself busy playing tricks on her grandchildren to keep them happy. She made quilts and crocheted bed dolls for them, regifted Grandma’s fur coat by making teddy bears for everyone and could knit a sweater by looking at the cover of Vogue. She gifted all her kids Christmas tree skirts and her grandchildren cherish them. Her family, church and community were her passion all her life. Her many hobbies included crosswords, puzzles, wood crafting, knitting, and quilting. Her aspirations when she retired was to make baby quilts, marriage quilts and quilts for everyone she loved. She raised her 13 children with humor, compassion and a firm hand. Eventually 35 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter joined the family. She celebrated each birth as a miracle and a blessing.
She was very proud of her family and kept herself busy making sure we were all well and happy. She loved making arts and crafts and quilted for all 81 descendants and those they love. We all received quilts stitched with love, thoughtfulness and kindness. Her hands were always busy and there was seldom enough time to get everything done. She enjoyed canning jam, pickles, and beans and we all love her sausage soup. She quilted, embroidered and kept her sense of humor until the last days we shared together. Freda was predeceased by husband Gordon Davey, their sons Perry and Terry and her siblings Hector and Maurice Bouvier and Lucille Lepowick. It’s hard to forget someone who gave you so much to remember.
