Robert Lewis MADISON (William, James, Ambrose) was born 3 Mar 1794 in Woodberry Forest, Madison County, Virginia. He died 9 Feb 1828 in Woodberry Forest, Madison County, Virginia from Tuberculosis and was buried in Madison Family Cemetery.
Robert was sent by James Madison, Jr. Apr 1813 - 1814 to Dickinson
College, Carlisle, New Jersey. He was counted in a census3 age between 16 to 26, William Madison
head of household Aug 1820 in Woodberry Forest, Madison County, Virginia. He was involved with
the toast at Lafayette's reception 1824 in Orange C.H., Orange County, Virginia. He was
employed state delagate from Madison County 1821 - 1823 in Richmond, VirginiaRobert was a son of Gen. William and Frances (Throckmorton) Madison. He stayed with President James Madison in the Executive Mansion (the White House) over the winter of 1812-13, and the Madisons provided at least some financial support for Robert to attend Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Robert married Eliza Strachan in 1816 and went on to represent Madison County in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1821 to 1823. After that he considered moving to eastern Florida, perhaps because his cousin, Edgar Macon, and his sister-in-law's family, Robert and Mary Strachan Hackley, had already settled there. He chose to stay in Virginia, however, and died two years later from tuberculosis. Eight of his ten siblings died of TB.

The most likely location of his grave is in President Madison's Montpelier Estate Cemetery, but it is unmarked if it is there. Eliza and her children remained in Orange County for a while, but moved back to her hometown of Petersburg, where she died in 1837. James Madison stipulated in his will that there would be money to support Robert and Eliza’s sons’ education.
