Donald was a crew member on Avro Lancaster Mk.III - PB402 which was sent on a mission to mark the Braunkohle-Benzin synthetic-oil plant at Zeitz, Germany. While en route to their objective they were involved in a mid-air collision with 434 Sqdn Lancaster - KB850 / WL-O resulting in both bombers crashing at Pfaffenhausen, Germany. Both aircrafts and aircrews were lost.
