Martha moved to France after her husband's successful Senate campaign in 1885, after she released love letters, written by her husband to her sister Caroline, for publication in the Oregonian. Her daughter, Mattie Elizabeth Mitchell, married François XVI Alfred Gaston, 5th Duc de La Rochefoucauld, Duc de Liancourt, Prince de Marcillac, Duc d'Anville, in 1892. They are buried in the chapel of château de La Rochefoucauld which may where Martha is buried.
